Garden storage cupboards — vertical storage for tight spaces
A garden storage cupboard is a tall, narrow shed-shaped unit designed for vertical storage rather than walk-in access. Footprint is small — typically 80cm × 50cm — but height runs 150–200cm. The result is meaningful storage in a space where a regular shed wouldn't fit.
Cupboards work best for tools, equipment, and gardening supplies. They're not great for cushions or large items — vertical storage doesn't suit horizontal goods.
What fits in a typical cupboard
Internal volume for an 80cm × 50cm × 180cm cupboard is roughly 720L. What that holds:
- Long-handled tools (spades, forks, rakes, brooms, strimmers) — vertical mounted on hooks or pegs
- Hand tools on shelves — secateurs, pruners, gardening gloves
- Bags of compost, fertiliser, slug pellets — bottom shelf
- Hose reels and watering equipment
- Outdoor cleaning equipment (mop, bucket, scrubbing brushes)
- Small bagged items (kindling, charcoal, briquettes)
Where cupboards go
- Side returns — narrow strips that won't fit a shed. Cupboards are designed for this.
- Against fences — utilising fence-side space without taking lawn area
- Behind larger structures — tucked into corners
- On balconies and roof terraces — vertical storage when horizontal isn't an option
- Allotments — secondary storage when the main shed is full
Materials
Cupboards come in the same three materials as sheds:
Plastic / resin — most common at this size. Light, zero-maintenance, modest aesthetic.
Metal (galvanised steel) — most secure and longest-lived. Thinner walls than equivalent shed because of the smaller footprint, but still robust.
Wood (treated softwood) — best aesthetic, requires annual treatment. Heavier than equivalent plastic.
Cupboard-specific features to look for
Adjustable shelving. Internal storage flexibility matters more in cupboards than sheds. Look for shelves that can be relocated or removed entirely.
Internal hooks or peg systems. Vertical storage relies on hanging tools — built-in hook strips or pegboard backs are dramatically more usable than empty walls.
Door handle / catch. Cupboards open via doors that need to stay closed in wind. Look for proper catches, not just friction-fit closures.
Lockable. Most cupboards are; the ones that aren't can have hasps added. For tools and equipment, lockable matters.
Placement considerations
Cupboards are tall enough to need anchoring. A 180cm-tall, 30kg cupboard can topple in strong wind, especially when door is open with weight inside. Most include wall-fixing brackets — use them. Anchor to:
- Brick or block walls (M8 expansion bolts)
- Treated timber posts (lag bolts)
- Fence posts (ratchet strap or wire)
Free-standing cupboards in exposed locations should also have a ground-fixed base — paving flag with concrete bolts works.
Door clearance
Cupboards have outward-opening doors. The space in front of the cupboard needs clearance equal to the door's swing width — usually 50–80cm. A cupboard hard against a wall on both sides doesn't open.
For very tight spaces, look for sliding-door or roll-up cupboards. They're rarer and more expensive but solve the clearance problem.
Vertical organisation
The single biggest factor in cupboard usability is internal organisation. An empty cupboard with one shelf has wasted vertical space; a properly-fitted cupboard with adjustable shelves, hooks and peg system uses every cubic centimetre.
Most cupboards come with basic internal fittings; if more sophisticated, you'll likely add your own (£30–80 worth of pegboard and hooks transforms a basic cupboard).
Maintenance
Same as sheds:
- Plastic: clean with mild detergent, hose off. Done.
- Metal: same as plastic, plus check for scratch-rust if not hot-dip galvanised
- Wood: annual cleaning + re-treatment every 2–3 years
