Garden Storage Sheds

Garden storage sheds are the answer for when a storage box or outdoor storage box simply isn't enough. This range covers walk-in buildings on the larger sizes and step-in models on the smaller ones, so you can match the shed to both the space you have and the way you want to use it. Pent roofs suit narrow spaces and boundaries, while apex roofs give the classic lines many gardens call for.

Every garden shed here is lockable as standard and weatherproof as standard, with floors rated to hold a workshop bench rather than just light tools. That makes them equally suited to secure garden storage, a potting space or a small workshop. Match the footprint to your plot, prepare a firm and level base first, and leave access around the outside for maintenance and to free up room from bulkier wheelie bin storage.

Sheds are where the UK garden storage category gets competitive — and where build quality varies most wildly. The supermarket-and-B&Q tier uses 8mm shiplap and 11mm floors; ours use 12mm tongue-and-groove and 19mm reinforced floors. That difference is invisible on the product page and obvious three winters in, when one shed is warping and the other isn't.

Size first. Small (up to 6×4 ft) fits a mower + tools in a compact garden. 6×4 to 8×6 is the family-garden sweet spot (bike, mower, tool bench, shelving). 8×6+ is workshop territory — for serious DIY, power tools, or big storage jobs.

Material next: plastic (UV-stabilised resin) for zero maintenance; metal (galvanised steel) for maximum security and longevity; or pressure-treated timber for the classic aesthetic (wooden sheds coming to this range later in 2026).

Finally, roof style: apex for traditional lines and more internal headroom; pent for narrow spaces where a classic roof would overhang.

Everything you need to know

Choosing the right garden storage for your space

Garden sheds that actually last in the UK climate

Buying a shed is one of those decisions you make once and then live with for a decade. Or, if you buy badly, twice within five years.

The UK garden shed market splits into two camps. The first is timber — pretty, traditional, and only as durable as the maintenance you put in. The second is modern alternatives: galvanised steel, UV-stabilised plastic, and resin composite. Each has a place. The honest answer to "which is best?" is: whichever matches how much time you'll actually spend looking after it.

The three big trade-offs

Timber sheds look fantastic, especially as they weather. The downside is maintenance: pressure-treated pine needs a coat of preservative every 2–4 years, and any timber shed needs annual inspection for joints loosening, felt roof failure, and damp ingress. Done well, a timber shed lasts 15+ years; ignored, 5–7. Look for BS 8417 Use Class 3 pressure-treated timber as a minimum standard.

Plastic and resin sheds trade looks for zero maintenance. Modern plastic sheds are made from UV-stabilised polypropylene or HDPE, which doesn't rot, doesn't need painting, and shrugs off rain and sun. They look more "shed" than "garden building" — fine if functionality is the priority. Service life: 12–15 years on a quality build.

Metal sheds are the most secure and the longest-lived if galvanised properly. Galvanised steel sheds sit at the practical end of the market — best for tools, e-bikes, anything you want behind a real lock. Service life: 20+ years if hot-dip galvanised; 5–8 if just powder-coated steel.

Sizing: what fits what

UK shed sizing is quoted in feet (a hangover from the timber tradition). Here's what you actually fit:

FootprintWhat fitsTypical use
4×3 ftLawnmower + a few toolsCompact gardens, balconies
6×4 ftMower, strimmer, tools, bikes (1)Most UK gardens
8×6 ft2 bikes, tools, BBQ, garden chairsFamily gardens
10×8 ftWorkshop space + storageHobbyists, allotments
12×8 ft+Workshop + ride-on mowerLarger plots

Buy the next size up from what you think you need. Garden storage is the one thing that always expands to fill the available space, and shed prices don't scale linearly — going from 6×4 to 8×6 ft typically adds 25–40% to the cost but more than doubles usable space.

Base preparation — the most-skipped step

A shed on an uneven base will warp, leak, and stick. Doors stop closing properly. Roof felt fails at the joints. Within two years you've got a problem you can't easily fix.

Three good base options:

  1. Concrete slab — gold standard. Lasts forever. Costs £150–£400 for a small shed footprint.
  2. Paving flags on hardcore — cheaper, perfectly fine for sheds up to 8×6 ft. Make sure the flags sit flat and the shed sits inside the slab perimeter (so water can drain away).
  3. Pressure-treated timber base on bearers — good for sheds that need slight ventilation underneath. Requires the bearers to sit on a level, well-drained surface — gravel works.

Don't put a shed directly on grass. It will move; rot will start within a year.

Security — does a shed lock matter?

If you're storing e-bikes, power tools, ride-on mowers, anything insurable: yes, very much. UK home insurance often requires a Sold Secure-rated lock or a hasp/staple combination on outbuilding doors before paying out on theft claims.

What to look for:

  • Sold Secure Bronze (or higher) rated padlock and hasp combination
  • Internal hinges or carriage bolts — external hinge pins can be popped
  • Double doors with a centre stile — single-door designs are easier to lever open
  • For high-value contents: a ground anchor + chain for the bike or tools, in addition to the shed lock

Browse our lockable storage range for models that meet these criteria.

Roof, doors and the things you'll thank yourself for

The roof is the bit that fails first on most cheap sheds. Felt-on-OSB needs replacing every 5–8 years; EPDM rubber roofing lasts 20+. If you can spec it, EPDM. Pent (sloping) roofs shed water better than apex (peaked) roofs in heavy UK rain — a bigger deal in exposed locations.

On doors: a wider doorway (60cm+) makes a meaningful difference if you're wheeling things in and out. Stable doors (split top/bottom) are useful if you'll spend time inside. Double doors are a must above 8×6 ft.

Where we ship and how delivery works

All sheds on this site ship from a UK warehouse. Sheds over 6×4 ft come on a pallet by kerbside courier — the driver delivers to the kerb, not onto your property. You'll need help to move it inside. Plan for two people minimum on assembly day.

Delivery is 5–7 working days standard, free over £100. We don't currently ship to the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland or anywhere outside mainland UK.

Assembly: what to expect honestly

  • Up to 6×4 ft: 2–3 hours, two people, screwdriver and spirit level
  • 6×4 to 8×6 ft: 3–5 hours, two people minimum (three is better)
  • Above 8×6 ft: half a day, three people ideal, you'll want a step ladder for the roof

Manufacturer-quoted times tend to be optimistic by 30–50%. See our assembly help page for tools, tips, and where to book a Tasker if you'd rather not DIY.

Common questions

"Do I need planning permission for a garden shed?" In England, sheds under 2.5m high (with eaves under 2.5m) and covering less than 50% of garden area are usually permitted development. Listed buildings, conservation areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty have stricter rules — check with your local council. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own thresholds.

"Will it survive a Scottish winter?" Quality plastic and galvanised metal will. Cheap timber won't — frost ingress through worn felt or untreated joints causes damage you'll see in spring. If you're somewhere genuinely exposed, bias towards metal.

"Insulation for using as a workshop?" Most off-the-shelf sheds aren't insulated. For year-round workshop use you'll want to add 25mm Celotex between battens (timber sheds) or close-cell foam panels (metal). Adds about £150–£300 to the build cost but makes a meaningful difference to usability through winter.

Common questions

Before you buy Garden Storage Sheds.

How do I choose the right garden shed?

Start with what you need to store and where the shed will go. Match the footprint to the space, then pick a roof style: pent for narrow spots and apex for classic lines. Consider material for durability and looks, and check the door type. Larger sizes are walk-in, while smaller models are step-in for tools and garden kit.

What size garden shed do I need?

Size to the largest items you plan to store plus room to move around them. A garden shed is the step up from a storage box when you need to keep a mower, workbench or bulky tools inside. Leave clearance around the outside too, so you can treat the walls and open the door fully once it is installed.

What is the difference between walk-in and step-in sheds?

Walk-in sheds, found on the larger sizes, have a full-height door so you can step right inside to reach shelving and a workbench. Step-in sheds on the smaller models are designed to be loaded from the doorway rather than entered, which suits tools and garden kit. Choose walk-in if you want to work inside the shed itself.

Does a garden shed need a base?

A firm, level base is strongly recommended. Setting the shed on solid ground keeps the floor clear of damp, helps the doors stay square and prevents the gradual sinking that shortens a shed's life. A timber base or base kit sized to the shed's footprint is the usual choice and is quicker to lay than concrete.

Are garden sheds lockable and weatherproof?

Yes, the sheds in this range are lockable and weatherproof as standard, so contents stay secure and dry through the seasons. Floors are rated to hold a workshop bench and heavier equipment rather than just light garden tools. Standing the shed on a level base helps it stay watertight and keeps the structure sound for longer.
