Metal bike storage — galvanised steel for serious security
If you have e-bikes, road bikes over £1,500, or live somewhere theft is a real concern, metal bike storage is the answer. Galvanised steel construction gives you the most theft-resistant, longest-lived storage in the bike category. Plastic and wood don't compete on raw security.
The boxes and sheds in this collection are filtered for hot-dip galvanised builds (not just powder-coated steel) — the difference between 5-year service life and 20+ years.
Why metal beats plastic for bike storage specifically
- Sold Secure ratings. Insurance-rated bike storage is almost exclusively metal. Plastic-only units rarely achieve Bronze, never Silver.
- Lever resistance. A determined thief with a crowbar gets through plastic in seconds. Galvanised metal takes substantially longer — long enough that opportunistic theft moves on.
- Anchorability. Metal storage units bolt-down to concrete properly. The unit becomes part of the floor, not a portable target.
- Weatherproofing. Galvanised steel doesn't degrade with UV. Plastic, even UV-stabilised, slowly does.
Hot-dip galvanised — the spec to insist on
Hot-dip galvanising is the manufacturing process where steel is dipped into molten zinc. The zinc bonds chemically to the steel surface and provides barrier and sacrificial protection — even when scratched, the surrounding zinc protects the exposed steel.
The cheaper alternative is "powder-coated" steel that hasn't been galvanised first. Powder coating is just paint. A scratch through paint to bare steel rusts within months, and the rust spreads under the coating.
For bike storage specifically, the difference matters because you're moving bikes in and out daily — scratches happen. With galvanised steel, scratches don't matter much. With powder-coated-only steel, they're the start of corrosion failure.
Configurations available
Metal bike storage comes in three main forms:
- Lift-lid bike boxes — low-profile, 1–3 bikes, typical footprint 200cm × 75cm × 100cm tall. Cheaper, quicker to use.
- Front-opening lockers — vertical doors, single or double-bike. Easier to wheel bikes in and out without lifting.
- Walk-in bike sheds — full-height, multiple bikes plus accessories. See bike storage sheds.
Sizing for adult bikes
| Bikes | Min. internal length | Min. internal width |
|---|---|---|
| 1 adult | 195cm | 75cm |
| 2 adult, parallel | 195cm | 140cm |
| 2 adult, offset | 200cm | 110cm (if offset front-back) |
| 3 adult | 200cm | 175cm or vertical mounting |
"Internal" matters — manufacturer external dimensions include wall thickness. Add 5–8cm of clearance for handling.
Lock and hasp considerations
The lock matters more than the box itself. Look for:
- Heavy-gauge integrated hasp — sized to take a Sold Secure padlock
- Anti-pry lid edges — overlapping flange so a crowbar has nothing to grip
- Internal hinges or tamper-proof bolts — external hinge pins are a known failure mode
- Floor anchor points — for bolting to concrete or paving
Buy a Sold Secure Silver+ padlock separately. Manufacturer-supplied locks are usually inadequate.
E-bike specific notes
For e-bikes:
- Store the battery indoors (most insurers require this; also extends battery life)
- Charge indoors only — never charge a battery in any outdoor storage unit
- Use a Gold-rated D-lock through frame and wheel, even inside the shed
- Add a ground anchor + chain — without it, thieves lift bike + box together
Heat and condensation
Metal storage gets warm in summer sun and cold overnight. Two practical issues:
- Heat: can affect tyre pressure and lubricants. Don't store anything heat-sensitive in metal in direct sun.
- Condensation: overnight cooling generates moisture inside sealed metal units. Look for vented designs to prevent rust on chains and components.
Anchoring to the ground
For high-value bikes, ground-anchor the storage unit. Two methods:
- Through-bolt to concrete: drill into a concrete slab, expansion-bolt the unit floor. Most secure.
- Patio anchor under paving: heavy steel ground anchor placed under a flag, chain through to the unit.
Anchoring is essential for insurance compliance on bikes over £2,000 typically.
Delivery
Metal bike storage ships pallet-direct from UK warehouse. Free over £100, 5–7 working days. Heavy units (60kg+ empty) — plan for two people on delivery day.
