"Which lasts longer?" is the question people ask when comparing materials, but it's the wrong question. The right one is: "Which has the longest service life given the maintenance load you'll actually do?" The honest answers will surprise some buyers.
The real lifespans (UK weather, properly maintained)

The shorthand: quality of build matters more than choice of material. A premium plastic box outlasts cheap metal. Hot-dip galvanised steel outlasts treated softwood. Cheap anything fails fast regardless.
Plastic — the under-rated option
What works. Modern UV-stabilised resin (also called HDPE composite or polypropylene blends) doesn't degrade in UK sunlight, doesn't rot, doesn't rust, and handles frost cycling. It's lighter than the alternatives — significant when positioning a 600L box — and it's cheap to manufacture, which keeps retail prices under control.
What doesn't. Aesthetics: even good plastic looks like plastic. It conducts heat, so interior temperatures in summer sun can hit 40°C+ — don't store anything heat-sensitive. Cheap plastic (commodity HDPE) goes chalky in 18 months and brittle in 3 years.
How to spot quality. Wall thickness: 4mm+ for stabilised resin, 2–3mm for commodity. Manufacturer warranty: 5–10 years for proper builds, 1–2 for the cheap end. Frost rating: -20°C for stabilised, -5°C for commodity.
Best for: households that want zero maintenance. Patios in direct sun (assuming nothing heat-sensitive inside). Rented homes where you'll move in a few years.
Metal — the security and longevity option
What works. Hot-dip galvanised steel is the longest-lived outdoor storage material full stop. Zinc bonds chemically into the steel surface and provides barrier and sacrificial corrosion protection — even when scratched, the surrounding zinc keeps protecting the exposed steel. Insurance schedules treat it differently: a metal storage unit with a Sold Secure-rated lock satisfies most home insurance requirements for bike and tool storage.
What doesn't. Heat (interior temperatures higher than plastic in summer sun). Condensation overnight as the metal cools — sealed metal boxes can drip onto contents. Aesthetics: utilitarian unless powder-coated to a neutral colour. Weight: positioning a 600L metal box is a two-person job.
How to spot quality. "Hot-dip galvanised" — not "powder-coated" alone. Heavy-gauge panels (visible at edges). Internal frame, not just panel-stamped. Sold Secure rating on the hasp specifically.
Best for: e-bikes and high-value bikes (insurance compliance). Power tool storage. Allotments where security matters. Locations with strong wind (heavier units don't lift). Anywhere exposed where rats are a risk (rats can chew plastic, not metal).
Wood — the aesthetic and traditional option
What works. Looks the best — particularly as it weathers to a silver patina. Doesn't conduct heat (interior stays cooler in summer than metal or plastic). Easy to repair: replace a single panel rather than the whole unit. Properly-treated hardwood lasts 20+ years with minimal maintenance.
What doesn't. Maintenance load is real — pressure-treated softwood needs re-treatment every 2–3 years to maintain water resistance. Skip it, and the lifetime drops from 12 years to 6. Wood swells and shrinks with moisture, which makes maintaining a perfect waterproof seal harder than plastic or metal.
How to spot quality. "BS 8417 Use Class 3" — the British Standard for outdoor timber. Without this designation, the timber may only be Use Class 1 (interior) and rots fast outside. FSC certification is a good sign for sustainability claims. For hardwoods: cedar, oak, and larch all weather well.
Best for: visible front-of-house installations where aesthetics matter. Conservation areas. Properties where the storage is a feature rather than utility. Buyers who'll actually do the maintenance.
