Metal garden storage boxes — when steel is the right answer
Metal storage boxes are the toughest, longest-lived, and most secure option in the catalogue. They're also the heaviest, the warmest in summer sun, and the easiest to dent if mishandled. Whether they're right for you comes down to what you're storing and where you're putting it.
Hot-dip galvanised vs powder-coated — the decisive question
The single biggest determinant of how long a metal storage box lasts is the corrosion treatment under the paint:
Hot-dip galvanised steel is steel dipped into molten zinc, which bonds into the steel's surface. Even if the powder coat scratches, the zinc keeps protecting the steel from rust. This is the long-life option — 20+ years in UK weather, properly cared for.
Powder-coated steel without galvanising is just painted steel. As soon as the paint scratches and water gets behind, rust starts spreading under the coating. Within 4–6 years you'll see bubbling at scratches and corner edges. By year 8 it's structural.
Cheap metal storage online is almost always the second category. Quality metal boxes that genuinely last are galvanised first, then powder-coated. The price difference at retail is £40–80; the lifecycle difference is dramatic.
Where metal genuinely wins
- Security — angle-grinder time aside, metal stops casual theft entirely. A lever bar that'd open plastic does nothing to galvanised steel.
- Insurance compliance — most contents insurers require metal storage with a Sold Secure-rated lock for bikes, tools and e-bikes above mid-range value.
- Vermin — rats can chew through plastic. They cannot chew through steel.
- UV resistance — galvanised steel doesn't degrade from UV. Plastic does, however UV-stabilised it is.
- Fire resistance — metal doesn't ignite. Relevant if you store fuel cans, BBQ charcoal, or near anything that might spark.
Where metal loses
- Heat — direct summer sun heats the inside to 40°C+. Don't store anything temperature-sensitive (chocolates, leather, electronics) in metal in direct sun.
- Condensation — sealed metal boxes generate condensation as overnight temperature drops. Look for designs with vented panels.
- Aesthetics — metal looks utilitarian. Fine for a side return; not the choice for a feature spot.
- Moveability — metal is heavy. Once positioned, it stays.
Sizing and capacities
Metal boxes typically come in sizes from 100L (small chest) up to 1,500L+ (small shed alternative). The sweet spot for residential use is 400–800L — large enough for full patio cushions, BBQ kit and tools, small enough to fit a side return.
| Size | Best for | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|
| 100–200L | Tools, accessories | 15–25kg |
| 400–600L | Cushions + accessories | 30–50kg |
| 800L+ | Bikes, fold-up furniture, large equipment | 60–100kg+ |
Lock and hasp considerations
The hasp matters more than the box. A box with a flimsy hasp is no more secure than plastic regardless of the steel walls. Look for:
- Sold Secure-rated hasp integrated into the design
- Internal hinges or carriage bolts — external hinge pins can be popped with a hammer
- Padlock receiver sized to take a Sold Secure Silver+ padlock (most insurance schedules require this for high-value contents)

Practical placement
Metal boxes work best out of direct sun. North-facing or east-facing walls are ideal. South-facing patios in summer are the worst-case for interior heat. If the only available spot is south-facing, look for vented designs and avoid storing anything heat-sensitive.
Drainage matters: metal boxes set on uneven ground will eventually pool water at the lower edge, which speeds up rust. A level base — paving flags or concrete — extends life by years.
Delivery and assembly
Metal boxes are heavier than equivalent plastic, so larger units are pallet-delivered to kerbside. Plan for two people on delivery day. Assembly takes 60–90 minutes for the largest units — phillips/cross-head screwdriver, M8 spanner, level. The galvanised panels can be sharp at edges, so wear gloves.
