Plastic garden storage boxes — what UV-stabilised resin actually buys you
"Plastic" covers a wide quality range. The cheapest commodity HDPE box from a supermarket is engineered for two summers; a properly UV-stabilised resin box from this range is engineered for ten or more. The price difference is roughly £30–£50; the lifecycle difference is one box vs four or five.
This page is the buying guide we'd write a friend. The boxes here are filtered for thicker-than-standard wall sections, sealed lid joinery, and resin grades that don't go chalky after two summers of UK sunshine.
How to tell genuine UV-stabilised resin from the cheap stuff
The shorthand: weight and finish. UV-stabilised resin uses more polymer per unit volume — it's noticeably heavier than commodity HDPE. The finish has a slight matte sheen rather than the glossy "look at me, I'm new" plastic look that goes chalky within 18 months.
- Wall thickness: 4mm+ for stabilised resin, 2–3mm for commodity. Visible at the lid lip if you look.
- Manufacturer warranty: stabilised resin manufacturers will quote 5–10 years routinely; commodity won't quote past 2.
- Frost rating: stabilised resin is rated to -20°C without cracking. Commodity HDPE goes brittle at -5°C and cracks under impact.
Sizing and use cases
| Capacity | Best for | Approx. footprint |
|---|---|---|
| Under 200L | Cushion sets, kids' toys, small tools | 120cm × 60cm |
| 300–500L | 4-seat patio cushions, BBQ accessories | 140cm × 75cm |
| 600L+ | Full patio sets + parasol + accessories | 160cm × 85cm |
| 1000L+ | Bikes, fold-flat furniture, garden equipment | 180cm × 100cm |
Quoted capacity is internal volume. Add 10–15% for usability — fully-packed boxes are no good because you can't reach the bottom items.
Practical features that matter
Gas-strut lids stay open by themselves. Once you've used one, the cheaper hinged variants feel cheap. Front access — doors as well as a lift lid — turns a storage box into a usable cupboard. Drainage holes in the base let condensation escape rather than pool. Lockable hasps matter if you'll keep tools or e-bike batteries inside.
UK weather considerations specifically
Three things kill plastic boxes in UK gardens: UV (south-facing patios), frost cycling (cold nights, warm days), and standing water (sealed-lid boxes that catch rain on top). Stabilised resin handles the first two; the third is a design issue — look for sloped or domed lids that shed water.
If your garden is genuinely exposed (coastal, hilltop, no overhanging trees), bias towards thicker-walled units even within the stabilised resin range. The cheapest resin from this range will outlast any commodity HDPE; the most expensive will outlast any other plastic option in any UK location.
Plastic vs metal vs wood — when plastic wins
Plastic wins when:
- You don't want to maintain anything — no painting, no staining, no rust treatment
- You need cheap, fast deployment — a metal or wood unit costs more and takes longer to install
- The location is wet or partly-sunken — plastic doesn't rot, doesn't rust
- You want to move it later — plastic is dramatically lighter
It loses when:
- Aesthetics matter — even good plastic looks like plastic
- Security matters — a determined intruder gets through plastic faster than steel
- You're storing high-value or temperature-sensitive items in direct sun (interior heat)
Assembly and delivery
All boxes ship from a UK warehouse with free mainland delivery over £100. Standard time 5–7 working days. Larger units ship pallet-direct to kerbside. Assembly is typically 30–60 minutes for the largest models — basic hand tools, two people. See our assembly help page for honest time estimates.
Common questions
"Will it survive a Scottish winter?" Yes, UV-stabilised resin is rated well below -20°C. Commodity plastic isn't.
"Mice and rats?" Sealed lid + sealed base joints are the prevention. The boxes here have both. Commodity boxes often have gaps at the seams.
"How heavy is it once assembled?" 25–55kg empty depending on size. You'll need help to position larger units. Once placed, they're fine to slide.
