Everything you need to know
A slim, upright garden cupboard — full-depth doors, an adjustable shelf and a footprint that fits a side alley.
Built from FSC-certified pine, pressure-treated against rot and rebuffed with a smooth planed finish. The cladding is 12mm — thicker than the high-street budget kits — and the corners are rebated rather than simply butt-jointed, so the frame stays square once it's up. Re-treat every two to three years with a clear wood oil and it'll outlast most plastic alternatives.
Doors open to the full depth of the cabinet so there's no awkward reach-in angle. An adjustable internal shelf lets you stack taller items vertically or wider ones flat.
What's included
- 1 × vertical garden cupboard
- Adjustable internal shelf
- Retrofit hasp point
- Assembly hardware and printed instructions
Designed for
- Narrow side-alley storage where a shed won't fit
- Vertical storage for rakes, brooms, spades and a strimmer
- BBQ tools, charcoal and grill covers kept out of the weather
Care & maintenance
Re-treat every two to three years with a clear wood oil or decking stain — the pressure-treatment is the first line of defence, not the only one. Keep the base off saturated ground if you can, and wipe clean with a damp cloth as needed.
Vertical storage for tight spaces
The Garden Storage Cupboard — Grey is from our garden storage cupboards range — tall, narrow units that store vertical items (long-handled tools, garden equipment, supplies) in a small footprint. The category solves a specific problem: storage when space is limited.
Plastic and resin construction — what UV-stabilised resin buys you
Plastic garden storage covers a wide quality range. The cheap end is commodity HDPE engineered for two summers; the Garden Storage Cupboard — Grey sits at the other end — UV-stabilised resin engineered for ten or more.
The differences that determine lifetime:
- UV stabilisation — additives in the polymer formulation that resist breakdown from sunlight. Without these, plastic goes chalky in 18 months and brittle in 3–4 years. Stabilised plastic stays flexible and structurally sound for a decade or more.
- Wall thickness — quality resin units use 4mm+ walls, visible at the lid lip. Cheap commodity plastic is 2–3mm and flexes when leaned on.
- Frost rating — stabilised resin handles -20°C without cracking. Commodity HDPE goes brittle at -5°C and cracks under impact.
- Sealed joinery — corner joints and lid gaskets that keep water out. The mark of an engineered product, not a moulded plastic shell.
The differences are usually invisible at the marketing level — manufacturers don't volunteer "we use cheap plastic" — but they show up unmistakably after the first 18 months in a UK garden.
Sizing and what fits
The exact dimensions and capacity for this product are in the specifications above. As a general guide for our storage cupboards range:
| Footprint | What fits |
|---|---|
| ~80×50cm × 180cm tall | Long-handled tools + shelved hand tools |
| ~100×60cm × 200cm tall | Above + bagged supplies + hose reel |
Internal dimensions are what matter for fit; external dimensions matter for placement clearance. Quoted capacity is brim-full; usable capacity is roughly 70-80% of that, since you can't pack to the lid and expect to retrieve bottom items.
UK weather considerations
British gardens see 1,000-1,200mm of annual rainfall, frost cycling between -5°C and +10°C through winter, and summer UV exposure that damages unstabilised materials. The Garden Storage Cupboard — Grey is engineered against those specific conditions. Practical implications:
- Frost — products in this range are rated for sustained sub-zero temperatures without cracking. The cheap alternatives aren't.
- UV — UV-stabilised plastics, hot-dip galvanised metal, and pressure-treated timber all handle UK summer sun. Commodity equivalents fail visibly within 2–3 years.
- Wind — exposed gardens (hilltops, coastal locations, wide gardens with no windbreaks) need anchoring. Most products in this range include floor anchor points; use them.
- Driving rain — sealed lid gaskets and overhung roof edges keep wind-driven rain out. Look for these features specifically if your site is exposed.
Base preparation
The single most-skipped step on outdoor storage installation. Cupboards need to be level for the doors to close properly. Paving flags or concrete are standard. Tall cupboards should also be wall-anchored using the supplied brackets — they topple in wind otherwise, especially when loaded.
Don't put any storage unit directly on grass. The base will move; lid seals will fail; condensation underneath will accelerate component failure. Plan the base before ordering the product.
Delivery and assembly
This product ships from our UK warehouse with free mainland delivery on orders over £100. Standard delivery is 5–7 working days, tracked. Larger units in this range may ship pallet-direct to your kerb depending on size; the driver delivers to the property edge, not onto the property itself. You'll get a dispatch email with a tracking link; the courier will text or email a delivery window the day before.
Cupboard assembly is 30-60 minutes with two people, basic hand tools. Make sure to use the wall-anchor brackets — cupboards are tall and topple in wind otherwise. See our assembly help page for tools, time estimates, and where to book a Tasker if you'd rather not DIY.
Returns and consumer protection
Every order is covered by your full UK consumer protections:
- Consumer Rights Act 2015 — the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. Your statutory rights apply automatically and never expire.
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 — 14 days from receipt to change your mind, no reason needed. See our returns page for the process.
- 30-day damaged-on-arrival guarantee — if anything's wrong on delivery, email us with photos and we'll arrange a free replacement or full refund including return postage.

Common questions about storage cupboards
Wall anchoring? Tall cupboards should always be wall-anchored using supplied brackets. They're top-heavy and topple in wind, especially when loaded.
Door clearance? Outward-opening doors need 50-80cm clearance in front of the cupboard. Hard against a wall on both sides means the cupboard doesn't open.
Internal organisation? Adjustable shelves + hooks/pegs transform a basic cupboard. Most come with basic fittings; £30-80 of pegboard and hooks added afterwards transforms the space.

Assembly time depends on the size — storage boxes take 15–45 minutes, benches around 30–60 minutes, sheds and bin stores 2–3 hours with two people. Exact figure for this product is in the Full specification table below. Tools needed: a screwdriver and a spirit level. Prefer someone else to build it? Book a verified Tasker via Taskrabbit.
A level, solid surface gives the best result for sheds and larger storage units — concrete slab, paving flags, or a pressure-treated timber base all work. Storage boxes sit on any level paved or decked surface. If the ground isn't level, panels won't line up cleanly and the unit won't be fully weathertight.
Standard UK mainland delivery is 5–7 working days, tracked. Free over £100. You'll get a dispatch email with a tracking link. We don't currently ship to Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Scottish Highlands & Islands, or Northern Ireland — see our delivery page for the full breakdown.
Email hello@garden-storage.com within 30 days of delivery with photos and your order number. We'll arrange a free replacement or full refund — including return postage. Damage is rare on pallet-shipped items, but it's fully covered under our returns policy.
You have full rights under the UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 (satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, as described) and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (14-day right to cancel from receipt). See our returns page for how the cooling-off period and refund timing work in practice.
