Everything you need to know
A ventilated log store with a separate shelf for kindling — airflow through the stack so firewood seasons properly instead of going mouldy.
Built from FSC-certified pine, pressure-treated against rot and rebuffed with a smooth planed finish. The cladding is 12mm — thicker than the high-street budget kits — and the corners are rebated rather than simply butt-jointed, so the frame stays square once it's up. Re-treat every two to three years with a clear wood oil and it'll outlast most plastic alternatives.
The open front lets air move through the stack so logs season properly rather than going mouldy at the back. A raised slatted floor keeps the bottom row off wet ground, and the sloped roof sheds rain away from the stack. A separate kindling shelf keeps dry-starter wood apart from the main pile.
What's included
- 1 × log store (flat-packed)
- Slatted raised base
- Kindling shelf
- Assembly hardware and printed instructions
Designed for
- Seasoning a single-winter supply of firewood
- Fuelling a wood-burner, chiminea or outdoor pizza oven
- Replacing the tarp-over-pallet setup in the side garden
Care & maintenance
Re-treat every two to three years with a clear wood oil or decking stain — the pressure-treatment is the first line of defence, not the only one. Keep the base off saturated ground if you can, and wipe clean with a damp cloth as needed.
Log storage — drying firewood properly is the whole job
The Waterproof Log Store — Grey is part of our log store range, designed specifically for seasoning UK firewood. The single most-misunderstood part of buying a log store: the goal isn't just rain shelter, it's airflow. Logs dry through ventilation; sheltered-but-still air keeps them wet.
Wooden construction — pressure-treated to BS 8417 Use Class 3
Timber outdoor storage is the most aesthetic option but the most maintenance-dependent. The Waterproof Log Store — Grey uses pressure-treated softwood meeting British Standard 8417 Use Class 3 — the spec that distinguishes proper outdoor timber from "treated" timber in the loose marketing sense.
What BS 8417 Use Class 3 actually means:
- Treatment depth and retention — preservative penetrates to a controlled depth at controlled concentration. Less rigorous treatments (Class 1, Class 2) are inadequate for permanent outdoor use in UK weather.
- 15-year service-life expectation — under normal exposure, with reasonable maintenance. Untreated softwood lasts 3–5 years outdoors in the UK; cheaply-treated softwood often only marginally better.
- Suitable for above-ground exterior use — exposed to weather but not in direct ground contact
The maintenance reality: pressure-treated softwood needs re-treatment with shed/garden-grade preservative every 2–3 years to maintain water resistance and rot protection. The treatment penetrates a few millimetres only — once the surface is weathered, you're protecting the rest. ~£15–25 of product per coat, 1 hour of labour. Skip it, and the lifetime drops from 12 years to 6.
Sizing and what fits
The exact dimensions and capacity for this product are in the specifications above. As a general guide for our log stores range:
| Capacity | Annual use |
|---|---|
| 0.3-0.6 m³ | 10-25 fires per year |
| 0.8-1.2 m³ | 50+ fires per year |
| 1.5-2.5 m³ | Daily winter use |
| 3.0+ m³ | Primary heat source |
Internal dimensions are what matter for fit; external dimensions matter for placement clearance. Quoted capacity is brim-full; usable capacity is roughly 70-80% of that, since you can't pack to the lid and expect to retrieve bottom items.
UK weather considerations
British gardens see 1,000-1,200mm of annual rainfall, frost cycling between -5°C and +10°C through winter, and summer UV exposure that damages unstabilised materials. The Waterproof Log Store — Grey is engineered against those specific conditions. Practical implications:
- Frost — products in this range are rated for sustained sub-zero temperatures without cracking. The cheap alternatives aren't.
- UV — UV-stabilised plastics, hot-dip galvanised metal, and pressure-treated timber all handle UK summer sun. Commodity equivalents fail visibly within 2–3 years.
- Wind — exposed gardens (hilltops, coastal locations, wide gardens with no windbreaks) need anchoring. Most products in this range include floor anchor points; use them.
- Driving rain — sealed lid gaskets and overhung roof edges keep wind-driven rain out. Look for these features specifically if your site is exposed.
Base preparation
The single most-skipped step on outdoor storage installation. Log stores need a level base with airflow underneath. Paving flags work; gravel works (encourages drainage); decking is fine if structurally sound. The crucial part: the unit's bearers should sit clear of pooled water.
Don't put any storage unit directly on grass. The base will move; lid seals will fail; condensation underneath will accelerate component failure. Plan the base before ordering the product.
Delivery and assembly
This product ships from our UK warehouse with free mainland delivery on orders over £100. Standard delivery is 5–7 working days, tracked. This product ships pallet-direct to your kerbside. The driver won't bring the pallet down a path, up steps, or inside. Plan for help moving it from the kerb — two people minimum, or a pallet truck for the very largest. You'll get a dispatch email with a tracking link; the courier will text or email a delivery window the day before.
Log store assembly is straightforward — 30-90 minutes depending on size, two people. Hand tools only. See our assembly help page for tools, time estimates, and where to book a Tasker if you'd rather not DIY.
Returns and consumer protection
Every order is covered by your full UK consumer protections:
- Consumer Rights Act 2015 — the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. Your statutory rights apply automatically and never expire.
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 — 14 days from receipt to change your mind, no reason needed. See our returns page for the process.
- 30-day damaged-on-arrival guarantee — if anything's wrong on delivery, email us with photos and we'll arrange a free replacement or full refund including return postage.
For order questions, delivery updates, or post-purchase support, email hello@garden-storage.com or call +44 7383 567839 Mon–Fri 9am–5pm. We respond to email within one UK working day.
Common questions about log stores
Does it actually season firewood? Only if airflow is good. Open or louvred sides + raised floor + sloped roof = drying. Solid sides = decoration.
What wood should I burn? UK Ready to Burn certification (mandatory under 2 m³ since 2021) means under 20% moisture. Below 15% burns hotter and cleaner. Avoid skip-bag wood from unknown sources.
Maintenance? Pressure-treated softwood needs re-treatment every 2-3 years. Annual visual inspection of the bearers (the bottom rail) — they take the worst moisture.

Assembly time depends on the size — storage boxes take 15–45 minutes, benches around 30–60 minutes, sheds and bin stores 2–3 hours with two people. Exact figure for this product is in the Full specification table below. Tools needed: a screwdriver and a spirit level. Prefer someone else to build it? Book a verified Tasker via Taskrabbit.
A level, solid surface gives the best result for sheds and larger storage units — concrete slab, paving flags, or a pressure-treated timber base all work. Storage boxes sit on any level paved or decked surface. If the ground isn't level, panels won't line up cleanly and the unit won't be fully weathertight.
Standard UK mainland delivery is 5–7 working days, tracked. Free over £100. You'll get a dispatch email with a tracking link. We don't currently ship to Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Scottish Highlands & Islands, or Northern Ireland — see our delivery page for the full breakdown.
Email hello@garden-storage.com within 30 days of delivery with photos and your order number. We'll arrange a free replacement or full refund — including return postage. Damage is rare on pallet-shipped items, but it's fully covered under our returns policy.
